Pre-commissioning and commissioning are distinct phases in the process of bringing a new facility, equipment, or system into operation.
Pre-commissioning involves the preliminary activities conducted after construction and before the actual commissioning. This phase focuses on testing and verifying individual units, systems, or subsystems to ensure they function as designed. Activities typically include:
• Mechanical Completion: Confirming that fabrication, assembly, and non-functional testing of specific systems or facilities are complete, ensuring the integrity of construction and installation.
• System Testing: Conducting tests such as flushing, leak testing, and pressure testing to ensure systems are free from blockages, leaks, and can withstand operational pressures.
• Equipment Verification: Ensuring that all equipment is installed correctly and functions as intended, including checks on electrical systems, instrumentation, and control systems.
The goal of pre-commissioning is to prepare all components for the commissioning phase by ensuring they are correctly installed and function properly in isolation.
Commissioning is the phase where the entire system or facility is tested as a whole to ensure it operates according to the design specifications and meets the intended performance criteria. This phase includes:
• System Integration: Bringing together all subsystems and components to function as a cohesive unit.
• Operational Testing: Running the system under various conditions to verify performance, including load testing and performance benchmarking.
• Safety and Compliance Checks: Ensuring that all safety systems are operational and that the facility complies with relevant regulations and standards.
• Training and Documentation: Providing training for operators and maintenance personnel, and ensuring that all operational and maintenance documentation is complete and accurate.
The commissioning phase concludes when the system is fully operational, meets all performance criteria, and is ready for handover to the client or end-users.
